When something isn't working

AksharaIME isn't in my input source list

Almost always the login cycle. macOS only notices a newly installed input method after you log out and back in — until then it genuinely isn't there to add, and nothing on screen says so.

Log out and back in (or restart), then go to System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → +. It's listed under English, not Marathi — that's a quirk of how macOS groups input methods, not a mistake on your part.

If you've already done a login cycle and it's still missing, the installer may not have finished. Re-run it and watch for an error at the end.

macOS says the developer can't be verified

Expected, and it will keep happening until the app is notarised by Apple. It means the build isn't registered with Apple — not that anything is wrong with it.

Click Done on the warning, then open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll to the bottom, and click Open Anyway next to the AksharaIME message.

You'll see this once per installed version, including after each update.

Moving to a new Mac, or off an old one

Open the companion on the Mac you're leaving and choose Deactivate, then activate on the new one. The slot frees as soon as the old Mac next connects — usually seconds.

Deactivated by mistake? Press Undo. It works right up until that Mac connects and acts on it.

Can't get to the old Mac — lost, stolen, sold or dead? Sign in on your account page and use Release slot now. That frees the slot immediately without needing the machine.

Typing has stopped working

Open the AksharaIME menu from the menu bar. It always states which of these it is, so you don't have to guess.

Licence needs renewing — this Mac has been offline longer than its lease. Connect to the internet and it renews itself; there's a Check licence now item if you'd rather not wait.

Not activated — open the companion and press Activate this Mac.

Deactivated — the licence was released from another device. Re-activate from the companion and it resumes straight away.

A word comes out wrong

Try it in the demo first — it runs the exact same engine the app does, so if the demo gets it right and your Mac doesn't, they're on different versions and updating will fix it.

If the demo gets it wrong too, that's a bug in the scheme and worth telling us about. Send the letters you typed and what you expected — that's enough to reproduce it.
